My Blog

After studying clothes in site A of my coursework and music in site B, I have become interested in studying subcultures and how both of these things are integrated within them.

What Are Subcultures?

On Wikipedia, a ‘subculture’ is defined as a group of people with a culture (whether distinct or hidden) which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong. A subculture is often differentiated by status, beliefs, ethnic background, residence, religion, clothing and interests.

Why do people join subcultures?

People often join subcultures just because they have stuff in common with the other members of these subculture. Other reasons people may join subcultures is due to peer pressure or family influence. Joining a subculture can also give a person a sense of belonging and acceptance.

When looking at the subculture 'goths', it seems like they reject mainstream society to become 'individual' but then when they join a subculture they're forced to conform by wearing black and dying their hair dark colours which to me defeats the object of individuality if they're all going to  wear the same clothes.
